US Customs and Border protection is getting hip with #mobilepasport, their Mobile Passport app.
If you don’t travel enough for a trusted traveler program to be worth it (it’s always worth it, but to each his own) and you live in one of these cities, Mobile Passport will save you lots of hassle.

It’s free and super simple to set up.
- Download the app (for iOS and Android)
- Set up your profile (including for family members you’ll travel with)
- Answer questions about your trip
- Submit your data at the port of entry
- Follow the Mobile Passport signs to a shorter line and they’ll scan your QR code
You’ll need to be connected to wifi or mobile data in order to submit your info at the port of entry.
The Mobile Passport app is available for US citizens and Canadian citizens with a B1 or B2 visa. Obviously, you’ll need a valid passport and still need to have it with you when you travel.
If you’re traveling from one of the airports that’s participating in this program, it could be a good alternative to Global Entry or NEXUS.
Yes, I agree with Tara. I also avoid carrying branded materials while traveling because it’s risky. Actually, this app is only for US citizens only. So others don’t have to worry about it.
This seems like a good idea, but I’m wondering how it works if you have to use cell service when you go through customs in other countries. I’m sure it depends on your carrier, but are you charged huge roaming fees? I generally by cheap phones when I travel oversees, so I’m not sure it would work for me.
The mobile passport app only works in specific US cities and only works for US citizens, so no need to worry about roaming fees.
I had no idea this app existed! Now I really can’t lose my phone. 🙂 I like that there’s a shorter line for app holders.
Interesting. I did not know it was this easy to do. I will definitely be downloading this app today before my next trip.
This really does seem like a handy tool. I’m always looking for ways to make airport experiences a lot easier and less stressful lol 🙂 Thanks for sharing this tip!
Good information for the less frequent travelers as an alternative to Global entry. NIce option for US and Canadians.
